A shocking 65% of employees go through a divorce or the end of a long-term relationship in the course of their working lives. Yet while the corporate world has support programs for bereavement, long-term illness, parental leave, etc., divorce has almost zero resources dedicated to it. Karl holds that this is the most widespread unaddressed mental health issue in today’s workplace, and offers real-world solutions for corporations to take action with. It’s not just about kindness; offering divorce support is the smartest business, cultural, and PR move a company can make.

When Karl began divorcing his ex-husband, he quickly discovered that divorce laws were written for the battle of the sexes. The journey that he chronicles in his book “How To Burn A Rainbow” deals with the differences that a same-sex divorce has legally and socially. But most surprisingly, how divorce was an incredible bridge builder between him and the heterosexual community – divorce as it turns out, is the great equalizer that bonds everyone.

For centuries, cultures have been asking the question “Should LGBTQ+ people exist?” But it’s the wrong question. Whether you believe 100% in God or science (or in between) there is no doubt we are part of the plan. Researchers have discovered LGBTQ+ behavior in over 450 species of mammals alone. So the better question to ask is “Why do LGBTQ+ people exist?” and what we as a planet are missing out on by not asking.
